Born in 1948 in Santo Stefano Belbo, Pierflavio Gallina has dedicated several works to his famous fellow citizen, former writer and poet, Cesare Pavese, including the use of some of Pavese’s eloquent lines on the Langa in the titles of his paintings. Gallina trained as an artist in Turin during the 1970s and it is this city which provided him with his biggest professional success, with the acceptance of one of his works into the GAM, the Turin Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. During the 1980s, Gallina opened a personal gallery in Sestriere and, in 1988, held his first international exhibition in New York. Two years later, he held an exhibition during the football world cup, held in Italy that year. In 1991, his personal show in Alba entitled "Regeneration of the Vineyard", was so successful that the GAM bought two of his works. A year later, he returned to the USA, this time for a show held in Robert Mondavi’s world famous winery in Napa Valley, California. Pierflavio Gallina has held numerous personal exhibitions, including one at Cherasco’s Palazzo Salmatoris in 1994, in Turin’s Fiat Palazzina Liberty building in 1996, in Barolo Castle in 1999. Giovanni Carandente, at that time Director of the Venice Biennial, presented the exhibition held in Alba in 2002 in the Magdalen Choir when he was elected Painter of the Palio; in 2003, he held a show in the Chiostro Cesare Pavese Study Center in Santo Stefano Belbo. In 2006, an exhibition was organised in the Cuneo Province Meeting Rooms to celebrate forty years of Gallina’s art, and in 2012 he was selected by gallery owner Ermanno Tedeschi for an exhibition entitled "The Clothes of Memory", for the Day of Memory. In 2018, Pierflavio celebrated his 70 years with the traveling exhibition "EX VOTO" at the Spazio 7 Gallery of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation in Turin, in the Church of San Domenico in Alba, at Palazzo Salmatoris in Cherasco and Palazzo Samone in Cuneo with the presentation of Aldo Cazzullo.
Today Pierflavio Gallina lives and works in the little village of La Morra, where he has his studio (now also a rooms and breakfast), and where he can dedicate himself fully to his passions: art, naturally, but also excellent wine, hazel nuts and white truffles.
